St. Peter’s Labyrinth
Walking the labyrinth is one way to experience an active prayer. Within our 16-acre campus, this space is a quiet space reflection near the Bank Barn, butterfly garden and bee hives. The beautiful outdoor setting helps to remind us of the wonders of God’s creation. There are many benefits to walking the labyrinth including quieting the mind, stirring creativity, providing peace during times of sorrow or strife, and inspiring gratitude for God’s love and creation.
Labyrinth History
The practice of walking a labyrinth is found in multiple cultures and was incorporated into Christian life during the Middle Ages. It is a non-denominational tool for well-being. There is no right or wrong way to walk the path of the labyrinth. The word “maze” is often interchanged with labyrinth, although a labyrinth is not intended to confuse and has no dead ends – all paths lead to the center.
Prayers for Contemplation
The Merton Prayer from Thoughts in Solitude by Thomas Merton
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”
The Labyrinth Path by Halli Chambers
Walk with a sense of humor
It will ease your burdens.
Walk with a sense of adventure,
And be open to new possibilities.
Walk with a sense of gratitude,
And be receptive to abundance.
Walk with a sense of JOY,
And experience joy with others.
Walk connected to the Earth,
And be grounded in your world.
Walk connected to others,
And have love in your heart.
Walk with intention,
And create your reality.
Walk with God,
And find your place
In this Universe.
